Bar Harbor Community Farm

At Bar Harbor Community Farm, we grow over 50 varieties of MOFGA-certified organic vegetables for the Mount Desert Island community. We are supported by a 75-member CSA and sell wholesale to area restaurants.

Our vision is to provide our neighbors with organic, delicious, and nourishing vegetables, produced with the highest standards in farming practices. We understand that the soil in which we grow is a complex microbial community that we must sustain and feed in order to ensure its long-term health. We want the nearby watershed to remain pristine, and the air to be clear. At the same time, we want to strengthen our community.

Food is the most basic common interest of humanity. Our aim is to encourage delight in this shared common interest, and to foster a deeper understanding of how food grows. Sustainable practices include sustaining farmers. As this work is being done we strive to juggle all the variables so we are well rested, well fed, and fairly compensated for our labors.

We are located at 115 Gilbert Farm Road. We also grow on a beautiful, sandy loam 2-acre leased field on Norway Drive in Bar Harbor. In collaboration with Maine Coast Heritage Trust, and with the support of many friends and professionals, we have bought the old Gilbert Farm on Gilbert Farm Road (about 2 miles from the leased field). This 50 acres is now preserved, with agricultural and nature easements, as farmland forever. The 15 acres of tillable soils are considered “agricultural soils of statewide significance.” We are honored with this opportunity to preserve a historic farm and continue the tradition of providing local produce to the Island.
