Food Waste Reduction Alliance (FWRA)

Every year, approximately 40 million tons of food waste are sent to landfills in the United States. At the same time, record numbers of Americans—one in six—are receiving government food assistance. The sources of food waste are varied and many. Food waste is generated by consumers, but it can also be a byproduct of manufacturing, retail, and foodservice operations.

As industry leaders committed to improving our environment and our communities, the members of the Food Waste Reduction Alliance are taking on the challenges of food waste in an attempt to shrink our environmental footprint, and simultaneously address hunger in America. We will achieve these objectives by addressing the root causes of food waste within our own operations, and securing pathways to donate or recycle unavoidable food waste.

Formed in 2011, the FWRA operates under the auspices of the food sector’s leading trade associations, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), and the National Restaurant Association (NRA). This landmark, cross-industry initiative includes more than 30 manufacturing, retailing and foodservice companies, along with expert partners from the anti-hunger community and waste management sector (scroll down for a complete list of members). The Alliance is cochaired by ConAgra Foods, one of the world’s largest food processors, Wegman’s Supermarkets, a leading US grocery store chain, and Wendy’s QSCC the exclusive supply chain manager for all Wendy’s restaurants in North America.
