In Southwestern Oregon, Siskiyou Sustainable Cooperative CSA is a collaboration between eight small-scale family farms and ranches in the Applegate Valley. In its early days, the group received a grant from the Oregon Department of Agriculture to write a business plan and form an agricultural cooperative. In 2002 it incorporated. The farms produce certified organic fruits, vegetables and specialty items. Each farm brings its goods to one location for box assembly; a 50-mile delivery route drops off boxes, about 220 shares, in several towns.
Advantages for member farms include providing access to a “one-stop shopping” experience for members (including add-ons like bread, goat cheeses, flowers, sauerkraut, etc.), sharing equipment, sharing knowledge about what’s growing well, and mitigating risk of a crop failure.
